JEE Main 2017 Eligibility Criteria.


The post contains the list of criteria that a candidate must qualify to be eligible to appear in the Joint Entrance Exam (Main).

Eligibility Criteria about Age limit / Date of Birth of a candidate

  • Candidate must be born on October 1, 1992 or later in order to qualify.
  • However, Reserved Candidates (SC/ST/PwD) will have extra 5 years, that makes them eligible if they're born on or after October 1, 1987.
  • Important Note: Only the DOB mentioned in Secondary Edu. Board / University certificate will be taken as the correct reference.

Maximum Number of Attempts

  • A candidate can technically appear for JEE Main a total of three times, however the condition remains that they are eligible at the time. (Meeting all the above criteria)

Qualifying Exam

  • The qualifying exam refers to Class XII or its equivalent examinations.

Year of Passing the Qualifying Exam

  • The qualifying exam must be cleared in 2015 or 2016. However, the students appearing for the qualifying exams (XII or its equivalent) in 2017 are also eligible to appear for JEE Main 2017.
  • Candidates must have taken the qualifying exam with at least 5 subjects.

Percentages required in qualifying exam

JEE Main 2017 Required percentage
B.E / B.Tech5 subjects, with minimum 45% marks (For general category)
40% in case of reserved category candidates
B.Arch / B.PlanningMathematics is required, with 50% marks in total. (5 Subjects)

List of all Qualifying Exams

  • The final examination of the 10+2 system, conducted by any recognized central/ state Board, such as Central Board of Secondary Education, New Delhi; Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations, New Delhi; etc.
  • Two-year Pre-University exam and Intermediate exam conducted by a recognized Board/ University.
  • Final exam of the two-year course of the Joint Services Wing of the National Defence Academy.
  • H.S.C. vocational exam.
  • Senior Secondary School Exam with a minimum of five subjects conducted by the National Institute of Open Schooling.
  • A Diploma which is recognized by either AICTE or a state board of technical education of at least 3 year duration.
  • Any Public University/School/Board exam in India or in any foreign country recognized as equivalent to the 10+2 system by the Association of Indian Universities (AIU).
  • General Certificate Education (GCE) exam (London / Cambridge / Sri Lanka) at the Advanced (A) level. [This is only for Admission to IITs]
  • High School Certificate Exam of the Cambridge University or International Baccalaureate Diploma of the International Baccalaureate Office, Geneva. [Only for Admission to IITs]
